Alvecote Meadows

These meadows contribute 11.3ha to the largest SSSI in Warwickshire, Alvecote Pools. They support a variety of wetland habitats, including wet grassland, marsh, reed swamp, with water mint and greater pond sedge, lesser water parsnip and common flea-bane, and open water. The site attracts a large range of dragonflies, damselflies and birds such as snipe, pied wagtail, goldfinch and kestrel. Twenty-four species of butterfly have been recorded here, including dingy skipper, small heath and wall brown all making appearances. Marshy areas provide habitat for several nationally scarce beetles. Ruddy darter dragonflies are a familiar sight darting by the stream that divides the two meadows, and even the occasional common hawker, a rarity in Warwickshire, may be seen. Alvecote Meadow’s mature oaks, ash and willow offer ideal roosting spots to tawny owl, sparrow hawk and an array of finches. The grassland attracts snipe, lapwing and little egret. Grass snake, frog, toad and newts are regular visitors to this reserve.
